Artist's Description

A Cayuse family begins to prepare for thanksgiving under the Elk Horn mountains in north east Oregon. The tall mountain ash trees are filled with color and are the willows along the Powder River. The Cayuse were originally located in north eastern Oregon and lived adjacent to the Nez Perce Tribe. The Cayuse placed a high premium on warfare and were skilled horseman. They developed the Cayuse Pony. Jennifer is currently working on the Cayuse Pony history.
In 1855 the Cayuse ceded most of their traditional territory and moved to the Umtallia Reservation where they formed a confederate tribe.
The Cayuse hunted for elk, rabbit, fowl, and small game. Women gathered camas root, bitter root, pine nuts, huckleberry and choke cherry. The painting depicts the women processing food and creating baskets from the many reeds. The rabbit fur blankets provided much warmth inside their reed and hide huts.
The painting has joined Jennifer Lakes “Wild West Collection”. We hope you enjoy.<...
